Schenectady Gets $1 Million for Its ‘Smart City’ Project

“Schenectady, New York, is getting $1 million from the state to install ‘smart’ lighting technology in the city’s Mont Pleasant neighborhood. State Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara and Mayor Gary McCarthy pushed for the New York state capital project funding. It will provide an entry to bring more smart technologies to the neighborhood.”

Troy Hires Economic Development Coordinator

“The City of Troy has hired Cheryl Kennedy as its economic development coordinator. Kennedy was most recently annual campaign and grants manager at Excelsior College, a distance learning college headquartered in Albany. The Troy economic development coordinator is responsible for marketing the city to businesses, developers and residents and serving as a liaison with business and neighborhoods.”

RIT names President of its Kosovo Campus

“Rochester Institute of Technology global campus in Kosovo will have its first female leader, officials announced Tuesday. Sharon Hart has been selected to become president, succeeding Winfred Thompson, who is retiring later this month. Hart most recently served as president of the Northern Marianas College in Saipan, located in the U.S. commonwealth of the Western Pacific.”

Jet Engine Business will Drive Top Line Growth, Hiring in Green Island

“LAI New York is expanding into the aerospace industry, a little more than a year after its parent company acquired Zak Inc., a third-generation manufacturing company in Green Island, New York. The Green Island manufacturer is part of LAI International, which operates six factories from Arizona to Maine that make everything from helmets and vehicle armor for the military to gas turbine parts, molds, crucibles and orthopedic and surgical equipment.”

John W. Danforth Expanding Operations near Albany

“John W. Danforth Co. has plans to double the size of its operaion in the Saratoga County town of Halfmoon, located near Albany, and create 147 new jobs over the next three years. The Tonwanda-based mechanical contractor is preparing to construct a two-story, 30,000-square-foot office addition at its warehouse and manufacturing plant.”

RIT Receives Grant to Develop New App for Deaf Students

“The National Science Foundation awarded more than $800,000 to the Rochester Institute of Technology to develop a new mobile app curriculum tailored for deaf and hard of hearing students, officials announced. Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-Perinton, announced the $820,504 grant Tuesday that will begin with a five-course curriculum to be developed and initially offered at RIT’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf.”

‘Wheels are Finally Starting to Move’ for Uber, Lyft, assemblyman says

“Lawmakers are working on a proposal that would change insurance requirements to make it easier for Uber and Lyft to operate in upstate New York. The state Assembly will likely introduce and pass a measure focused on changing the state’s automotive insurance rules for ride-sharing companies, Assemblyman John McDonald III from Cohoes said. Assembly Democrats met to discuss the issue Monday.”
