ASME Design for Additive Manufacturing with Metals Workshops

ASME will offer two special workshops on metal additive manufacturing during the LiveWorx 18 Technology Conference in Boston. The two ASME half-day workshops will be held on June 20. Led by additive manufacturing (AM) experts, the workshops are intended for engineers and professionals seeking insight on utilizing metal AM for new products.

The first workshop, “Metal Additive Manufacturing — Foundation for Finding Value,” will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The session, to be presented by MatterFab founder Matt Burris, will provide business operations and design engineers with the background they’ll need to recognize both the value and the challenges that employing metal AM can bring to their companies. The workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to examine the realities of metal additive and explore the key ways to drive value through engineering design and business operations. In addition to discussing the various types of metal additive manufacturing, supply chain and post-production concerns, and the unit economics of metal AM, Burris will also explore emerging technologies, trends and the strategic implications for the manufacturing industry.

A second workshop, “Metal Additive Manufacturing – Design Considerations,” will be held that afternoon from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Presented by Tim Simpson, director of the Additive Manufacturing and Design master’s degree program at Penn State and co-director of the University’s CIMP-3D lab, will address such questions as how to ascertain the best orientation for 3D printing a martini glass; when the appropriate time is to replicate existing parts using AM; and how to optimize a design for additive manufacturing. Dr. Simpson, who teaches courses on product design, 3D printing and mass customization, will discuss his own real-world experiences and provide attendees with a detailed checklist to prepare for designing and 3D printing with metal.

Registration for the Design for Additive Manufacturing Workshops includes a complimentary two-day LiveWorx Explorer Pass (a $695 value). Registrants for the workshops will also qualify for a discount on the LiveWorx All Access Pass, which includes access to the conference’s technical sessions.

Registration for each of the ASME workshops is $300 if registrants use the code ASME18.
