About

Meyda Lighting is a third-generation, family-owned manufacturer based in Yorkville, specializing in decorative and custom lighting solutions. The company operates multiple divisions, including Meyda Custom Lighting and 2nd Ave. Lighting, which produces high-end, custom-designed fixtures. With a manufacturing facility and showroom near Utica, Meyda Lighting employs approximately 50 people and serves a wide range of residential and commercial markets.

The Challenge

Meyda Lighting relies on e-commerce platforms to support its online sales and customer engagement. As the company continued to grow its expansive product catalog, it recognized the need to improve its digital presence to remain competitive. Specifically, Meyda sought to enhance its website design, functionality, and search engine optimization (SEO) to increase visibility, drive more web traffic, and convert visitors into customers.

Chester Cohen, Management Executive at Meyda Lighting, connected with FuzeHub—part of the New York Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NY MEP) and the MEP National Network™—to address these challenges and unlock new growth opportunities.

MEP’s Role

FuzeHub partnered with Meyda Lighting to identify and resolve technical issues that were negatively impacting the company’s SEO performance. Working closely with Meyda’s internal team and web developers, FuzeHub led a comprehensive website redesign focused on improving both user experience and backend functionality.

This overhaul enabled the seamless integration of thousands of new products into the website, significantly expanding Meyda’s digital catalog. In addition, FuzeHub provided strategic SEO guidance, helping the company improve content quality, metadata, internal linking, and overall site architecture—key components for increasing search engine rankings and discoverability.

To further strengthen Meyda’s digital marketing efforts, FuzeHub also supported the implementation of email automation tools, allowing for more effective outbound marketing and customer engagement.

“Meyda has been manufacturing and designing award-winning Tiffany, Rustic and Custom lighting for 50 years. We engaged FuzeHub, which expertly guided a major website design and functionality overhaul that included thousands of products and helped us achieve a 65% traffic growth from our old website. We increased our content quality, metadata, internal links, and information architecture. Utilizing FuzeHub’s capabilities, our website has become more user-friendly, quicker, and easier to navigate, expediting our ROI and substantially raising our SEO rankings, site traffic and lead generation.”
— Chester Cohen, Management Executive

Results

The impact of this collaboration was significant and measurable:

Increased Sales: $750,000

New Investment: $485,000

Cost Savings: $30,000

Jobs Created: 3

Jobs Retained: 5

Through its partnership with FuzeHub, Meyda Lighting successfully transformed its digital presence—enhancing user experience, boosting online visibility, and driving meaningful business growth.

The first step was to conduct a gap analysis to identify areas of the quality management system that did not comply with the AS9100D standard. After completing this, the analysis was reviewed with management. The tasks of updating the system documents were assigned to appropriate personnel, and the completed documents were reviewed by the quality manager and Insyte staff.

Following this, members of the organization were trained on the requirements and process of internal auditing. As the new documentation was released, internal audits were initiated. While updating the documents for AS9100D, the ISO recertification was conducted. Several findings were identified that needed to be addressed to maintain the existing certification. This delayed the progress toward finalizing the AS9100D-compliant system.

Once the existing ISO system was recertified, the focus shifted back to implementing the new AS9100D system. Documentation was completed and presented to company personnel, and internal audits were conducted. After several weeks of addressing audit findings and enhancing the system, the AS9100D certification audit was scheduled.

Norwegian Baked uses traditional family recipes to bake crispbread (knekkebrød) in its Brooklyn bakery. The business has experienced solid growth with wholesale partners who resell the crispbread nationwide. Norwegian Baked is also seeing promising success on their Etsy storefront, with over 3,000 unique orders and rave reviews. Because these products are highly specific, the search terms around them are very deliberate, leading to high conversion rates with a large percentage of visitors to the Etsy shop becoming paying customers. However, these specific product terms also limit the ability to attract new traffic or introduce non-Nordics to Norwegian Baked’s products. The New York City Industrial & Technology Assistance Corporation (ITAC), part of the New York MEP and the MEP National NetworkTM, partnered with Norwegian Baked to initiate a project to optimize the Etsy website store to increase both organic traffic and order volume, while maintaining high conversion rates.

Since the term “Knekkebrød” is very specific, ITAC and its partners recommended techniques to attract a broader audience and introduce the product to new customers. The project began with a visual refresh. The online storefront layout was improved, and updated branding and images helped showcase some of the many ways this traditional snack can be enjoyed in American households.

New products were also developed to further expand keywords and listings. Revised titles and product images helped attract a broader audience on both new and existing product listings, and additional testing was conducted on related keywords. These new terms focused on health benefits, snacks, and recipes that use crackers, as well as other unique advantages that introduced Knekkebrød to a wider range of consumers.

Like any online campaign, it’s essential to keep experimenting and optimizing. To track this testing process and progress, templates were created for long-term research and growth. The Norwegian Baked team gained new knowledge of listing format templates, research methods, and other optimization skills to better manage this process.

Tests ran for four weeks, and after this period, results were recorded, and further edits were made. The impacts of this project were immediate, and the team was excited about the results.

Thanks to the success of this work, ITAC introduced Norwegian Baked to a similar Brooklyn business, and they are co-developing a product line to launch on the Etsy storefront.

Plattco Corporation is an employee-owned company with over 100 years of experience in designing, forging, and building dry-goods valves in the heart of Plattsburgh, NY. They invented the first double flap airlock valves that prevent leakage in the 1960s and have since developed thousands of custom solutions across many industries worldwide. Wherever you encounter difficult-to-manage dry materials in tough environments, you’ll find Plattco valves. Their team of about 55 people is dedicated to leading the industry by blending innovative ideas with respect for traditional craftsmanship and open communication. Plattco values their workforce and community, which is reflected in strong loyalty, long-term stability, and a long list of satisfied customers.

Plattco’s facilities consist of two aging buildings separated by gravel, leading to inefficiencies in key processes like design, production, inventory management, and shipping and receiving. This physical separation, along with outdated infrastructure, challenges interdepartmental communication and operational efficiency, and fails to meet current environmental and energy standards.

Planning the construction of a state-of-the-art facility while maintaining high-intensity production processes, including metal forging, requires careful coordination and a resilient, aligned workforce. Recognizing that this transformation affects every part of the organization, Plattco engaged CITEC, part of the New York MEP and the MEP National Network, to help build the organizational readiness and alignment needed to support their long-term growth and modernization goals over many years.

This collaborative effort made sure every employee understood their role in the company’s future, encouraging a unified culture ready to face the challenges of modernization.

To support effective leadership during this critical period, Plattco teamed up with CITEC to deliver management development training for its leadership team members.
Plattco’s dedication to continuous improvement includes leveraging research and innovation.
Insyte Consulting collaborated with the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) to assess reverse osmosis (RO) technology as a cost-effective way for WSB to reuse process water and minimize hazardous waste. From this assessment, a process was developed to produce water suitable for reuse, with an estimated 95% decrease in hazardous waste.

WSB chose to buy the system and enlisted NYSP2I’s help in implementing the process water recycling system.

A collaborative team consisting of WSB, NYSP2I, and the equipment supplier reviewed the Bill of Materials and system layout. The team supervised the system’s start-up and worked to optimize its performance after the custom-designed and fabricated system was installed.

A mixing tote was added to collect all rinses, serving as an equalization tank. The combined solution was then transferred to the RO process tank through a 5-micron filter to improve system performance. Additional modifications included installing a pressurized bladder tank and ion exchange columns to efficiently route RO permeate back to various operations.

Delivering Network Services

To help manufacturers stay competitive in increasingly complex markets, NY MEP provides critical services and expert guidance. Areas include technology adoption and commercialization, planning and research, business improvement, risk management, and business growth. Companies in each of NY MEP’s 10 regions have access to a local center and to FuzeHub, the statewide center.

Celebrating Successes Across the State

The NY MEP Annual Report also include three success stories from across New York State.

Insyte Consulting, Western New York’s MEP Center, helped a door and window manufacturer to decrease lead times, increase on-time deliveries, and boost throughput.

LIMEP, the Long Island NY MEP Center, helped a company that assembles and tests electric motors to reduce its work-in-process from 717 to 156 pieces.

The Center for Economic Growth, the Capital Region’s NY MEP Center, connected a startup to a FuzeHub-owned robot that was used to validate a prototype and begin production.

Making an Impact on NYS Manufacturing

Across New York State, NY MEP is delivering a massive impact. As its annual report explains, NY MEP creates or saves 1 job for every $1,490 in federal and state government funding. Key performance indicators include 6555 increased and saved jobs, 4425 completed manufacturing projects over five years, and over $1.3B in economic impacts for NYS companies.

Get the Report and Learn More

The NY MEP Annual Report is available online and includes a map of regional centers and information about the NY MEP leadership team. NYS technology and manufacturing companies are invited to download the report and ask FuzeHub about available manufacturing assistance.

Medical simulation models, ranging from small flesh-like wound cells to intravenous Practice Arms and full-body frames, are usually made with silicone-based thermoplastics or thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs). Silicone-based TPEs are often produced at large scales through injection molding, but this method presents challenges for manufacturing smaller quantities of medical simulation units. Besides the high costs that create barriers to market entry, Training Bridge aimed to address other issues with silicone-based TPEs, such as their lack of recyclability and difficulty in repair. Conversely, plant-based TPEs provide benefits in molding, quick customization, repairability, and recyclability.

The New York State Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NYMEP) is achieving measurable results as it helps the state’s small-to-medium manufacturers become more competitive. Across New York State’s 62 counties, no other program offers as much support to small and mid-sized manufacturers as NYMEP does.

NY MEP measures the results of its efforts by analyzing independent, third-party survey data that is collected on behalf of the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), a national network of which NY MEP is a part. Surveys are sent directly to NY MEP clients, who then answer a series of questions about the economic impact of the services they receive.

Economic Impacts and Return on Investment

For the most recent five-year period for which data is available, NY MEP delivered over $7.6 billion in economic impacts. This reporting period (2019-2023) includes the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused a significant economic downturn. The survey data includes company cost savings, increased and retained sales, capital expenditures, and funds acquired. Manufacturing is cost-sensitive and capital-intensive, but NY MEP clients increased their competitiveness and invested in their future.

As part of its 4,425 projects with the state’s manufacturers, NY MEP supported the creation and retention of 32,766 jobs. This is another significant metric because of the wage differential between manufacturing and non-manufacturing employment. According to Zip Recruiter, the average entry-level manufacturing salary in NYS was $34/hour as of February 27, 2025. That’s significantly higher than the average NYS salary of $25/hour for workers in all industries across all experience levels.

NY MEP is credited with creating or saving 1 job for every $1,490 in government funding. Much of this funding comes from the federal government, but New York State also contributes to the NY MEP program, which benefits all New Yorkers in terms of good-paying jobs and strong communities.

How NY MEP Powers the Manufacturing Industry

NY MEP provides critical services and expert guidance through its statewide center and ten regional centers. Small-to-medium manufacturers that work with NY MEP can:

Improve workflow and increase productivity and cost savings

Accelerate modernization and adoption of advanced technologies

Upskill their workforce and attract talent

Improve market competitiveness and find new markets

Develop strategies to address market challenges

Enhance technological and production capabilities

NY MEP invites New York State manufacturers to contact us for assistance.
