3D CAD File Creation
In today’s manufacturing environment, a good set of 3D CAD files of your product is an absolute necessity. For prototypes, which are often hand-made one-off devices, this is often an afterthought.
Not only are CAD files essential for many manufacturing processes (including 3D printing), they are also useful in creating product renderings/animations, easily conceptualizing different product iterations, and calculating material properties (like volumes and weights).
3D CAD File Updates
Once 3D CAD files of the product have been generated, it is important to perform engineering analysis to optimize the design for the manufacturability of the product.
This will ensure the design is suitable for the intended manufacturing processes and lead to potential cost reductions. As an example, 3D printing is great for plastic prototypes, but for high-volume injection molded parts you need to consider draft angles, wall thicknesses, and a number of other criteria.
2D Drawing Creation
A complete drawing package, containing a traditional 2D print of each component and a full assembly drawing with Bill of Materials, will generally be requested by contract manufacturers in order to create accurate quotations.
These documents are generated from the 3D CAD files and further specify things like critical dimensions, material properties, and surface finishes. This clear documentation is also key to avoiding costly mistakes as parts are revised over time.
