National Science Foundation grant awarded to University at Buffalo

The University at Buffalo has received a $2.9 million National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to transform the traditional role of a database as a repository for information into an automated computer laboratory that rapidly collects, interprets and learns from massive amounts of information.

Manufacturer Bucher Emhart grows and secures jobs in the Southern Tier

A new Bucher Emhart Glass Manufacturing Inc. plant opened in Big Flats this week will help retain 110 jobs in the Southern Tier, said both company and state economic development representatives.

Solar Power “breakthrough” will take root in Western New York

Frank van Mierlo holds his dream in one hand — a hair-thin wafer of silicon, the platform for a solar power cell. After nearly 10 years and $100 million of investment, the dream is on the doorstep of happening. Next year, van Mierlo’s startup, 1366 Technologies, is set to break ground on a new wafer manufacturing plant between Buffalo and Rochester in rural upstate New York.

Plattsburgh will be home for Norsk Titanium

Plattsburgh has been chosen to host the world’s first industrial scale high-technology manufacturing plant for titanium aerospace components.  The head of Norsk Titanium met with business leaders from the region Monday to talk about the state-of-the-art technology and the $1 billion investment in a new manufacturing plant and training facility at the old Clinton County Airport.

Photonic innovation leader joins National Manufacturing Institute

Infinera has become the latest member of AIM Photonics, demonstrating the continued swell of support for the Rochester-based initiative. Infinera will play a key role within the institute, providing access to its industry leading Indium Phosphide (InP) photonics technology and establishing InP-based Foundry Wafer access for AIM.

Additive Manufacturing and Multifunctional Printing Center officially opens at RIT

The Additive Manufacturing and Multifunctional Printing Center officially opened Tuesday at Rochester Institute of Technology. The 3,200-square-foot center is on RIT’s Henrietta campus. The AMPrint Center “will propel RIT and the Finger Lakes region to the forefront in accelerating the growth of this industry,” said Bill Destler, RIT’s president.
