New York State Innovation Summit Informs & Delights

A sold-out event, bustling exhibition hall, and insights from industry leaders were some of the highlights from this year’s New York State Innovation Summit, which was held on October 7 and 8, 2019 at the Rochester Convention Center in Rochester, New York. This two-day event underscored New York State’s commitment to innovation and both informed and delighted the approximately 550 participants, which included exhibitors from about 100 companies.
Part of the NYSTAR annual meeting, the New York State Innovation Summit joined resources from across the Division of Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR) within Empire State Development (ESD), New York State’s largest economic development agency. Members of NYSTAR-funded centers and other state resources connected not only with each other, but also with the many exhibitors, presenters, panelists, and visitors who participated in the two-day event.
In the exhibit hall, innovative companies showcased products and technologies ranging from artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced materials to digital gaming and delicious desserts made in New York. Exhibitors welcomed visitors from across New York State and also networked with neighboring exhibitors, some of whom may become supply chain connections. The exhibit hall was also the site of a Day 2 networking reception with a visit by Bumblebee, a fictional robot superhero in the Transformers movie franchise.
In the main hall where meals and presentations were held, attendees listened to keynote addresses, partner updates, and insights about hot topics such as the workforce of tomorrow and advances in U.S. manufacturing. Eric J. Gertler, ESD’s new president and CEO, led the Day 1 welcome lunch with an update about how ESD is supporting New York State’s innovation economy. Kevin Surace, an internationally recognized futurist on disruptive innovation, delivered Day’s lunchtime keynote address.
The New York State Innovation Summit also featured three separate tracks about disruptive technology, commercialization, and sustainability and energy. Participants listened to panel discussions and then asked questions of the assembled experts. As the New York State Innovation Summit continues to grow, some attendees asked where and when the event will be held next year.
