Over the past two years, FuzeHub, under contract with NYSERDA, convened a steering committee of industry, academic, and government stakeholders to explore strategies to leverage existing strengths in New York State in the area of additive manufacturing. This month, NYSERDA and Empire State Development published FuzeHub’s resulting report on the “Status of and Vision for the Additive Manufacturing Ecosystem in New York State.” (Click here for Report 17-12.)

New York State is home to a wealth of assets and expertise in additive manufacturing, and these assets have begun an initial effort to organize into an ecosystem. There is now a ripe opportunity to accelerate and shape this coalescence in a way that maximizes the job creation potential associated with the sector’s growth. The report recommends interim activities to build momentum en route to formation of a potential consortium. It identifies challenges, frameworks for solutions, and potential beneficial impacts associated with the growth of the additive manufacturing and 3D printing industry in New York, and recommends a role for government to act as an ecosystem convener.

In examples of recent progress in advancing the additive manufacturing ecosystem in New York State, Empire State Development’s Division of Science, Technology & Innovation (NYSTAR) secured a grant from the National Institute of Standards & Technology to conduct proactive outreach to small manufacturers regarding use of the technology. That outreach is being conducted by New York Manufacturing Extension Partnership representative Bill Murray ([email protected]), who is based at Rochester Institute of Technology’s Additive Manufacturing & Multifunctional Printing (AMPrint) Center.
