How Plug Power is Doubling Production at its Latham Factory
Plug Power will add a second shift at its Latham factory to double its output. About 12 people were hired to add the shift, and those workers are already being trained, manufacturing manager Daniel Connelly said. “This has come to the point where it makes more sense to add a second shift,” Connelly said. He said the addition of a second eight-hour shift will cut labor costs by reducing overtime payments.”

“The Genesee County Economic Development Center and 1366 Technologies seek proposals from local companies interested in potential supply chain or operational opportunities. With headquarters in Bedford, Mass., the 1366 Technologies solar wafer manufacturing facility will be constructed in the town of Alabama, Genesee County, and is scheduled to open in 2017.”

Gillibrand Announces Bill to Permanently Designate Rochester as a “Manufacturing Community”
“Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s Made in America Manufacturing Communities Act would permanently establish the Finger Lakes region as a manufacturing community, giving the area preferential treatment when applying for certain federal economic development grants. The Finger Lakes, led by Rochester, was labeled a manufacturing community back in 2014 under President Obama’s Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership.”

Skin Care Startup Wins Hot Spot Designation
“Empire State Development has welcomed a third LaunchPad Huntington-sponsored startup into its Innovation Hot Spot program. The state’s economic-development driver has opened the books for Smithtown-based Kantian Sciences Corp., a 2015 spinoff of 2012 startup Kantian Skincare LLC. Kantian is a maker of anti-acne products, with production of its proprietary skin-care medications contracted in Pennsylvania.”

City to Invest $7.2 million in New Hubs to Bolster Tech
“The city announced Thursday it will open business hubs in midtown and the Brooklyn Navy Yard to increase jobs in tech and expand its efforts in urban problem-solving. The new centers are part of a new $7.2 million program called UrbanTech NYC. The two locations will total more than 100,000 square feet and cater to companies that are too big to participate in incubator or accelerator programs, but can’t afford market-rate office space.”
