New York will celebrate Manufacturing Day 2018 with nearly 60 events across the state. Since its inception in 2011, Manufacturing Day has provided manufacturers and resources like the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) network with an opportunity to engage students, educators, and community members. Some events are open to the public, but most are invitation-only and in partnership with local schools.
Held on the first Friday of October, Manufacturing Day addresses common misperceptions about what it’s like to work in industry – and how skilled manufacturing jobs are both well-paid and rewarding. Here’s a look at some what’s happening across New York State this Manufacturing Day – Friday, October 5, 2018. Please note that some events have already occurred while others are scheduled for later this month.
Capital Region and North Country
In the Capital Region, the Center for Economic Growth (CEG) connected manufacturers with local schools, spoke at Mohonasen High School and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and held a workshop with Ballston Spa’s Clean Tech Energy Early College High School problem. During the October 3 workshop, CEG introduced students to Technology Driven Market Intelligence (TDMI) and Technology Scouting.
Capital region companies that are providing tours on Manufacturing Day include ACO Mold, Applied Robotics, and Greno Industries. In the North Country, the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing (IAM) at Clinton Community College hosted three hundred students at morning and afternoon sessions during an October 3 event.
Central New York, Mohawk Valley, Finger Lakes and Rochester
In Central New York, MACNY is sponsoring events at Gear Motions, Lockheed Martin, and WestRock Solvay Mill. Train Develop Optimize (TDO) is participating in MACNY’s Lockheed Martin event, which is focused on identifying, hiring, and retaining candidates for advanced manufacturing careers. In the Mohawk Valley, SUNY Polytechnic Institute is marking Manufacturing Day for the sixth consecutive year.
Farther west, the Oswego County PTECH & CITI/OSWEGO BOCES will provide a presentation at the Center for Instruction, Technology, and Innovation. Companies that are offering student tours include Accede Mold & Tool Co., Optimax, and Pactiv.
Southern Tier and Western New York
In the Southern Tier, both the Chemung County Chamber of Commerce and the Cortland County Chamber of Commerce are hosting Manufacturing Day events. Cameron Manufacturing & Design, Gutchess Lumber Co., Masonite, Monofrax, and The Raymond Corporation are providing student tours.
In Western New York, Manufacturing Day includes an open house at the Eastern Monroe Career Center and events with the Buffalo Niagara Manufacturing Alliance and Dream It Do It Erie Niagara. Company-led activities are planned at Northrup Grumman, K-Technologies,  and Innomotive Solutions Group/Andor.
Mid-Hudson Valley
In the mid-Hudson Valley, Ametek Rotron, EFCO Products, Meyer Tool Inc., Nexans Energy USA, and Sonotek will provide local students with plant tours. Pine Bush High School is also promoting awareness of manufacturing careers.
Long Island
On Long Island, the Manufacturing Technology Resource Consortium (MTRC) is organizing a biomedical facility tour at Avery Biomedical Devices. Ignite Long Island and Future Tech Enterprise are also planning Manufacturing Day events. Students will tour Precipart, Spectronics Corp., and The Nature’s Bounty Co.
New York City
In New York City, the Industrial and Technology Assistance Corporation (ITAC) began its Manufacturing Day celebrations a day early with an October 4 Solutions Forum at the Brooklyn Army Terminal that was powered by FuzeHub and co-hosted by ITAC, NYCEDC, and NYC Innovation Hot Spot. On Manufacturing Day itself, ITAC is organizing an event about the Power of Apprenticeships at Boyce Technologies.
Manufacturing Day events are also planned at Vaugh College of Aeronautics and Technology and Ferra Designs Inc. and the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
