According to NCC Group research featured in Material Handling & Logistics News, a dangerous disconnect exists between confidence and reality in supply chain cybersecurity. While 94% of businesses express confidence in their ability to respond to a cyberattack, nearly half (45%) experienced a breach within the last year, with half of those attacks suspending operations entirely. The problem is compounded by misplaced trust: 92% of organizations trust their suppliers follow cybersecurity best practices, yet only 66% conduct thorough risk assessments. This overconfidence is particularly risky as supply chain attacks have surged to record levels in 2025, occurring at twice their long-term average since April.

Manufacturing companies are especially vulnerable due to their complex ecosystems, interconnected systems, and low tolerance for downtime—making them likely targets for ransomware attacks. With global ransomware at record highs and threat actors exploiting straightforward techniques to access virtually unguarded supply chain networks, security experts warn that the chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Organizations believing they could weather a five-day supplier outage with no operational impact face a rude awakening, as supply chain attacks now pose threats not just to individual companies but to entire economies.
