The 13 Centers of Excellence (CoEs) supported by Empire State Development’s Division of Science, Technology & Innovation (NYSTAR) were created to foster partnerships between academic institutions and entrepreneurs in the areas of research & development, product commercialization, and workforce training.
The CoEs leverage private-sector investments with the goal of creating and expanding technology-related businesses and employment. In FY 2015-16, CoE clients working with emerging technologies including cutting edge materials, integrated circuitry, life sciences and advanced energy, created 417 new jobs and retained nearly 1,000 others as a result of these collaborations.
A unique new center is the Center of Excellence in Precision Medicine and Responses to Bioterrorism and Disasters at New York Medical College in Valhalla, Westchester County. This facility combines NYMC’s expertise in disaster medicine with precision strategies and countermeasures such as antidotes to fight biological and chemical threats. By applying research findings, simulating scenes and victims, and training emergency responders, the Center helps communities and businesses prepare for bioterrorism, natural disasters, and other mass-casualty events.
