FuzeHub and Rensselaer to Lead Mid-Atlantic Hub of New Federal Robotics Institute

U.S. Department of Defense Awards $80 Million for New Advanced Robotics Manufacturing (ARM) Institute Headquartered in Pittsburgh; Companies Invited to Consider Membership
FuzeHub will be a founding member of the newest Manufacturing USA institute—the Advanced Robotics Manufacturing (ARM) Institute. Led by Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), ARM Institute is national in scope, with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and FuzeHub co-leading the Institute’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Robotics Innovation Collaborative (RRIC).
The Department of Defense’s $80 million award to CMU will be matched by $173 million in contributions pledged by the winning coalition, comprised of more than 220 partners from industry, universities, community colleges, non-profit organizations, and state and local governments from across the country. Companies are invited to contact FuzeHub about ARM Institute membership, which provides access to a strong national public-private manufacturing network that is focused on the deployment, training and development of cutting edge robotics technology.
The Manufacturing USA network now includes 14 institutes established to help revitalize American manufacturing and incentivize companies to co-invest in new technology development in the United States. ARM seeks to empower American workers to compete with low-wage workers abroad; create and sustain new jobs to secure U.S. national prosperity; lower the technical, operational, and economic barriers for small- and medium-sized enterprises as well as large companies to adopt robotics technologies; and assert U.S. leadership in advanced manufacturing. It will usher in significant new opportunities in collaborative robotics—robot control, autonomy and mobility, perception and sensing, and other key areas—that will have a profound impact on numerous New York State companies in the U.S. defense supply chain and commercial manufacturing sector. The Institute will also focus on addressing robotics-related education and workforce development challenges, issues of great importance to New York’s economy.
FuzeHub takes on this role in its capacity as the Empire State Development-designated statewide New York Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) center, for which it maintains programs of matching and referring manufacturers to resources for innovation and growth. Working with Rensselaer’s Center for Automation Technologies and Systems (CATS), FuzeHub will leverage its platforms to maximize the impact of this industry-driven Institute’s work on small and mid-sized manufacturers.
“The Manufacturing USA network is a decisive initiative in U.S. efforts to maintain a leading edge in manufacturing competitiveness,” said FuzeHub Executive Director Elena Garuc. “FuzeHub is pleased to play a role in the network and to help ensure that the Institute’s work makes its way into New York’s manufacturing base. Our mission is to help small New York State manufacturers grow through innovation, and robotics is an increasingly important technology to advance.”
FuzeHub is also partnering with a separate Manufacturing USA institute, the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute, to create a New York MEP position that serves as a liaison between that institute’s capabilities and small manufacturers throughout New York and the Northeast. FuzeHub’s partners in that initiative include California Manufacturing Technology Consulting, the California-based Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
