As one of 15 Centers for Advanced Technology (CATs) funded by NYSTAR, the Center for Advanced Systems and Engineering (CASE) at Syracuse University helps businesses of all sizes and any industry sector achieve their R&D goals, access the latest technologies, and connect with experts in information-related disciplines.

The CAT program was created in 1983 to encourage greater collaboration between private industry and universities in the development and application of new technologies. Through CASE, which opened that year, businesses can get affordable office space on campus; consult with experts on the Syracuse University faculty; hire trained graduate students–who CASE Director Pramod Varshney called “the next generation of scientists”–to solve technical problems or enhance products or capabilities; and access an advanced prototype development lab or fleet of drones.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recognized CASE’s extraordinary abilities and selected it to use Griffiss International Airport, which is one of the nation’s seven test sites for drones. According to Varshney, the work will be unique because Griffiss is the only site in the world that allows for non-sight testing of drones.
