Solar Wafer Manufacturer Seeks NYS Suppliers

Economic development doesn’t just create jobs when manufacturers open new facilities. There are plenty of so-called “indirect jobs”, too. When 1366 Technologies opens its new Genesee County plant in 2017, the solar wafer manufacturer will employ between 600 and 1000 people. The Bedford, Massachusetts company will also bring supply chain and operational opportunities to New York State. Can you benefit from them?
According to InformAnalytics, a Web-based tool for economic developers, the 1366 Technologies project is especially promising. In addition to the 600 to 1000 direct jobs at the western New York facility, approximately 1,600 other jobs will be created. Together, the economic impact of direct, indirect, and so-called “induced” jobs will total approximately $1.5 million.
In Genesee County, the opportunities abound. Recently, Empire State Development (ESD) awarded the Genesee County Economic Development Center (GCEDC) a multi-million dollar grant for the Western New York Science and Technology Advanced Manufacturing Park (WNY STAMP). As New York State’s second shovel-ready mega site, WNY STAMP will host 1366 Technologies as its first tenant.
The solar wafer manufacturer’s $700-million factory isn’t open yet, but that’s not keeping the Massachusetts-based company from starting to build its local supply chain now. By harnessing the marketing and business networking power of Buffalo Niagara Enterprise and Greater Rochester Enterprise (GRE), 1366 Technologies can find the resources its needs – and create indirect jobs along the way.
“Because of the highly skilled and talented workforce in the Finger Lakes and Western New York regions, 1366 Technologies is not going to have any problems finding the right partners to make their operations in New York State a tremendous success,” says Mark Peterson, president and CEO of GRE.
